The French as a Second Language (FSL) program is designed to help students develop a lifelong ability to communicate with more people, increase cognitive ability, strengthen first language skills, have access to a greater number of career opportunities, and increase their appreciation of other people and their culture.
We offer two FSL programs:
- French Immersion
- Core French
French Immersion
To quality for the French Immersion Certificate, students must take at least 10 credits in French Immersion. Learn more about French Immersion at King City S.S.
Core French
To quality for the Core French Certificate, students must complete a Core French course at each grade level.
The FSL courses aim to provide students with the fundamental skills necessary to communicate in French, as well as encourage an appreciation of diverse francophone cultures. There is a focus on oral communication based on authentic language use – language that is meaningful and relevant to students’ real-life experiences and interests.
In Grade 9, students have the option to choose between the academic or applied stream. Students who continue their French studies until grade 12 are considered functionally bilingual and are prepared to study French at the university or college level. These students also receive a certificate of merit from our school.

Immersed in French
There are four strands to the French curriculum: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Students in both Core and Immersion also benefit from learning beyond the classroom:
- morning announcements partially in French
- events such as French cafes with games and an opportunity to socialize organized by French Council
- interacting with French media, such as movies and music
- bilingual posters for school events
- opportunities to work with elementary school students
- leadership opportunities as Ministre de la Francophonie on Student Council
